It has been reported by Iranian media that President Ebrahim Raisi tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on Sunday while flying through a mountainous area in northwestern Iran. The helicopter had initially gone missing, leading to a night-long search before the wreckage was ultimately located.

Red Crescent's Rescue effort

Emergency responders with the Iranian Red Crescent battled treacherous weather conditions including heavy fog, snowstorms, and mountainous topography to get to the airplane crash site in East Azerbaijan province. Upon arriving at the wreckage, they relayed back that there were no survivors.

Iranian state television did not immediately explain what caused the crash, which also resulted in the deaths of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the East Azerbaijan province governor, other government officials, and security guards, as reported by the state-run IRNA news service.
